Chief Executive Officer
Duncan Garrood

 

Duncan has over 40 years’ leadership experience in the consumer and hospitality sectors, with senior roles across major UK and international businesses. He is former Chief Executive Officer of Empiric Student Property plc, and held previous positions as CEO of Ten Entertainment, Bill’s Restaurants and Punch Taverns, as well as senior roles at M.H. Alshaya in the Middle East, SC Johnson and more than 20 years in senior positions with Unilever UK and China. He has also served as Chairman of Small Beer Brew Co, as a Senior Adviser to Blue Crescent Capital and currently is Chairman of Tortilla Mexican Grill PLC and Senior Independent Non-Executive Director for the Brighton Pier Group. 

 

Duncan joined Riverstone Living in February 2026 and in his spare time he is a voracious traveller, keen photographer and cook, amongst many other impressive hobbies.

Chief Financial Officer
John Clark

 

John has 25 years of experience in the Real Estate sector in Australia, the UK, and Europe across different industry segments including Investment management, construction, and development. John was the regional CFO for Lendlease where he has spent much of his career working in the retirement industry in Australia and found a passion for customer service. John’s professional journey is not just a tale of numbers; it’s a narrative of purpose for the industry with a passion for making a meaningful impact across not only finance but also working as a collective team. John now calls London and the UK home with his partner.

Riverstone Co-Founder
Paul Pheysey

 

Paul has worked in the property industry for 35 years. He set up BMB Group with Partner Julian Mercer in 1992, which developed and sold £1.5billion of central London property. In 2014, the pair decided to focus on alternative sectors of the market including student accommodation and assisted living. Paul is now Chief Investment Officer at Riverstone where he is responsible in sourcing and acquiring the most sought-after sites in prime central London. Paul is a great family man with many interests.

Paul Vesty
FRICS

Paul is a Chartered Surveyor with over 25 years’ experience of property development in central London. He has an in-depth knowledge of the city’s prime residential & senior living markets, acquired through senior positions at MP Capita, where he was London Regional Director, and at Northacre as Development Director, delivering in excess of £1.5billion of landmark residential schemes. Paul is Chief Development Officer at Riverstone where he puts his expertise in planning, design, procurement and construction to best use. Paul loves sailing “Moth of Morston” with his family, playing golf and forestry.

People & Operations Director
Tim Small

 

Tim brings a unique blend of experience and expertise to the Riverstone team. He has held senior HR, communication and operations roles for some of the world’s leading employers, such as InterContinental Hotels Group, Compass Group and Granada Group. He’s worked with iconic brands and helped build strong service cultures, with a hospitality DNA. He’s been instrumental in award-winning people programmes and significant business transformations. He has an equally diverse personal life: along with having three children he is a local councillor, an enthusiastic football fan and a passionate historical re-enactor.

Head of Legal and Compliance
Harry Blathwayt

 

Harry is Head of Legal and Compliance at Riverstone. A lawyer with 10 years’ experience in commercial and operational real estate, Harry is responsible for deal execution at Riverstone and delivering strategic legal advice and strong risk management across the business. Prior to joining Riverstone, Harry worked in Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP’s real estate team. In his spare time, if he’s not trying out a new cooking recipe, you’ll most likely find Harry on the tennis court or out on a hike.

Wellbeing & Quality Director
Dr Zoe Wyrko
MBChB, MMedSci, FRCP, FRCP (Edin)

Zoe is Wellbeing Director at Riverstone, responsible for overseeing Riverstone’s approach to wellbeing, which includes supporting the holistic physical and mental health of residents by making sure they can access the best available health and care providers, and ensuring that the latest scientific evidence in the rapidly growing field of healthy ageing research is at the forefront of what we do. Before moving to Riverstone, Zoe had a long career as a leading geriatrician which included holding officer roles within the British Geriatric Society as well as being a visiting Professor to the Aston University Research Centre into Healthy Ageing. She is passionate about changing the way society views ageing, from the negative language used to the way health and care systems are often set up around institutions rather than people. She was a subject matter expert for the multi-award winning Channel 4 programme Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds. Zoe is an enthusiastic gardener and a keen runner.

Group Sales Director
Ashley Holden

 

Ashley has a diverse background in the residential living sector spanning over a decade and began her career in the later living sector in the US market, working for Senior Lifestyle and Greystar. Ashley moved to the UK in 2019 to lead Quintain’s residential arm as their Sales Director where she was responsible for delivering over 70 million in revenue. Ashley focuses on driving a high-challenge support culture within her sales teams and has an unwavering passion for enhancing the customer journey and the resident experience. When she’s not working, you’ll find her trying a new restaurant in London or exploring the UK with her family and goldendoodle.

Head of People
Denise Roles

 

Denise is Head of People at Riverstone. A Chartered MCIPD professional, senior people partner and HR leader with over 25 years’ experience in various industry sectors including health insurance, health and social care, private equity, manufacturing, higher education and rail infrastructure. Denise was a senior project partner working on a UK wide change programme for Active Care Group. She has held senior HR Business Partner roles with Bupa, Kerry, Network Rail and Kingston University working closely with business leaders to align people strategy with organisational goals and providing expert advice on workforce planning, performance, change and employee engagement. She is passionate about building high‑performing cultures, developing confident line managers and ensuring people practices are both human‑centred and commercially effective.

Denise is married with two children and spends her time outside work exercising (paddle is the new craze), socialising with friends or visiting family back home in Northern Ireland.

Head of Marketing
Lauren Brierley

 

Lauren is Head of Marketing at Riverstone, where she leads the brand’s strategic positioning, growth marketing and customer engagement initiatives across the business. Her experience spans a number of leading luxury brands, including Selfridges and NetJets. At NetJets, a Berkshire Hathaway business, she oversaw marketing activity across the European division, supporting brand growth amongst high-net-worth audiences. Outside of work, Lauren will be planning her next trip or getting in her 10,000+ steps.

Meet the Board

Chairman
Penny Hughes CBE

 

As Chairman, Penny brings a wealth of experience of premium consumer brands including The Body Shop, Gap and Aston Martin, as well as serving on the boards of Vodafone, Reuters and the Royal Bank of Scotland amongst others. After overseeing the merger of the bottling interests of Coca-Cola UK and Schweppes, she became President of Coca-Cola GB & Ireland at the age of 33. Penny was instrumental in the sale of iQ Student Accommodation in May 2020 for the largest ever private real estate transaction in the UK. In 2011 she received a CBE for services to the media in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Penny and husband David have two grown up lads and a keen interest in sport unites the family, although the dog gets the top spot.

Non-Executive Director
Dr Natalie-Jane Macdonald MBE

 

Dr Natalie-Jane Macdonald MBE is a Non-Executive Director at Riverstone and has more than 30 years of healthcare experience working in a variety of roles, including eight years working as a doctor in the NHS and academic medicine. Dr Macdonald MBE was the former UK CEO of Sunrise Senior Living and Chairman of Nuffield Health, prior to this CEO of Acorn Care where she drove the company’s organic growth and strengthened the organisation’s operating results. Before then, she spent 17 years with Bupa, latterly as Managing Director of the UK funding businesses. Natalie is married with three children who are all at university and has a keen interest in running and open water swimming.

Non-Executive Director
Andy Chorley

 

Andy Chorley brings extensive experience in property development and project delivery, with a career focused on the successful execution of complex real estate projects such as The London 2012 Olympic programme, the Regeneration of Elephant Castle in South London, IQL in Stratford. He has held senior leadership roles across the property and construction sectors, including positions at Lendlease, Goldman Sachs and The Earls Court Development Company providing expertise in development management, operational delivery and governance. Alongside his executive career, Andy holds a number of non-executive and advisory roles within real estate investment, project management, and construction businesses supporting organisations through periods of growth and development.

 

Andy joined the Board of Riverstone Living in 2021 and contributes valuable insight into development strategy, delivery excellence, safety, and long-term asset stewardship. In his spare time, he coaches junior rugby and cricket and is always looking ft in a round of golf.
