Who we work with

What the family of our residents say

One of the most important aspects of finding somewhere for my parents to live for my brother and I, was safety. I’m so grateful for the commitment that Riverstone have to each individual, it’s everything to know that when we leave, they are taken care of.

Frequently asked questions

The word care is unusual, because it simultaneously has very positive and negative meanings. I care about my friends, at Riverstone we genuinely care about our residents – we want them to be happy, well, and living the way they want to.

Once you start talking about care as in somebody needing care or being cared for, it often becomes negative. It can become associated with a loss of power, a loss of independence for the person receiving that care. We don’t talk about care at Riverstone, we talk about support to stay independent. This change of language puts you or the person requiring care back into the centre of their world. It’s all about empowerment and choice.

People are often surprised when I talk about how many people need formal care for any significant period of time. It’s easy to think that it’s something that almost every older person needs, however if we look across the whole of society, it’s only around one third of people.

At Riverstone, we expect the number to be much lower, with around 15 percent of residents needing support at any time, which will be a mix of long and shorter term support.
Research has shown that living in a retirement community with an active wellbeing programme such as we have at Riverstone, means that you are less likely to ever need formal support compared to if you’d stayed in your previous home. And if you do need some care or support in a retirement community, you need less of it than in an ordinary house.

We’re confident when we say that if you move to Riverstone, you won’t need to ever move to a care home. We want you to stay living in your own home, as part of your community and social circle, whatever life throws at you. Needing even a high level of support doesn’t necessarily mean that you would be confined to your apartment.

The wellbeing team are here to recommend and introduce you to whoever you might need to support you.

The wellbeing team are here to help take the emotional pressure of arranging support away from you and your family, if you wish us to. We choose carefully who we work with at Riverstone, looking at quality but also the particular approach that the care company takes so that we know if they could be right for you.

At Riverstone, we make it less likely that you will need to have paid for care or support to stay independent.

The reason people need long term help is often due to frailty, and we now know that frailty can be prevented, this is the purpose behind what the Riverstone Wellbeing team do. Being part of a community, staying both interested and interesting, guards against physical and mental decline, and this is why we have the Riverstone Club.

Research has shown that people living in a retirement community with a wellbeing service need less formal care and support than if they’d stayed living in their own home. People who moved in with a care package in place found themselves either cancelling it all together, or reducing it after 6 months.
