How to Optimise Your Wellbeing The Riverstone Way

At Riverstone, longevity is focused around making the most of your years, optimising them to be as healthy as possible. It is not about living longer, rather how we can sustain clarity, capability and independence for as long as possible. To optimise wellbeing is to approach health with good intentions and making small positive behaviours easy to maintain.

Riverstone’s Wellbeing Director Dr Zoe Wyrko is a renowned geriatric consultant, and has been with Riverstone from the beginning to develop its approach to wellbeing. “Wellbeing at Riverstone is about preventing frailty and helping people understand about what getting older and what ageing means. It’s not about doctors and being ill. It’s about staying as well as possible, ” she explains. “That includes eating well, moving and exercising – all things that gets your immune system as healthy as possible. So then if you get a cold, you’re not as ill with it.”

Understanding how to improve longevity by maximising your wellbeing begins with recognising that where and how you live shapes daily choices. At Riverstone, wellbeing is designed into everyday life, creating the conditions for independence and vitality to thrive.

What Determines Longevity?

Longevity is influenced by several interconnected factors. Research consistently highlights that long-term health outcomes are shaped less by genetics alone and more by a combination of physical capability, metabolic resilience, cognitive stimulation and social context. These include

  • Muscle mass and strength
  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Metabolic health
  • Cognitive engagement
  • Social connection
  • Environment and stress levels

And so if asked “what is the key to longevity?”, the most accurate answer is balance.  At Riverstone, residents’ wellbeing is paramount, with programmes and a dedicated wellbeing team available to all residents to engage with as they wish.

The design of daily life matters. Environments that reduce stress, encourage movement and facilitate connection make healthy choices more consistent. Optimised design combined with discreet support reduces barriers and supports long-term wellbeing.

Does Exercise Increase Longevity?

In short, yes – and not just marginally. Strong evidence links regular physical activity with increased life expectancy and improved quality of life. At Riverstone, residents are encouraged to exercise however they can. “Yes, you’re probably not going to be running marathons if you were a runner but that doesn’t mean the automatic default is sitting in your chair,” shares Dr Zoe. “If you can’t do Pilates standing up then you can do it sitting down.”

What is the best exercise for longevity?

There is no single “best” activity. Dr Zoe’s approach is “The best sort of exercise to do is the one that you are going to do and that you enjoy.”  Often, the most beneficial programmes combine cardiovascular fitness, strength, balance and mobility. At Riverstone, our fitness studio offers a mix of classes that support long-term wellbeing from Pilates and aquafit in the heated swimming pool to ballet and tai chi. Additionally, walking is hugely beneficial, and our Walking Clubs encourage both walking and talking with fellow residents. As ever, they are optional for residents to opt in or out of as they wish.

Cognitive Health and Longevity

Physical health is only part of the equation. Cognitive engagement plays an equally important role in long-term vitality. While strength and cardiovascular fitness support the body’s capacity, mental stimulation sustains clarity, judgement and confidence. The ability to think critically, adapt to new situations and remain curious underpins independence just as much as mobility does.

A well-exercised mind contributes to better decision-making, emotional regulation and resilience. It supports purpose, which research increasingly associates with improved health outcomes. Intellectual engagement also reinforces identity. Continuing to explore ideas, culture and conversation ensures that life feels expansive rather than reduced.

At Riverstone, cognitive wellbeing is woven into daily life. Programmes such as Brainstrength, author talks, cinema clubs and partnerships with leading cultural institutions encourage intellectual engagement. Language classes, cooking demonstrations and opera events create opportunities for further cultural exploration with likeminded peers.

A Practical Longevity Framework

If you are considering how to make small improvements to your long-term wellbeing, the framework is clear. It is not built on extremes, but on repeatable behaviours supported by the right environment. Longevity is cumulative; small decisions made daily often carry more weight than occasional grand efforts.

A practical approach could include:

1. Building strength.

Use a state-of-the-art gym, strength training sessions and Aquafit classes to preserve muscle mass and functional capability.

2. Moving daily.

Step-free apartment layouts and proximity of amenities within the residence encourage natural movement throughout the day.

3. Stimulating the brain.

The Riverstone Club fosters learning, discussion and cultural engagement.

4. Staying socially connected.

Connection via The Riverstone Club, a lively restaurant, welcoming bar and shared lounges create opportunities for connection.

Longevity, or ensuring you stay as well as possible, is rarely about one decisive act. It is about creating a routine that supports positive behaviours over time. Ultimately, it’s about the opportunity to “continue living your life in the way you want to and the place you want it to with agency of your own life,” says Dr Zoe.
